Current Research

I am interested in how we can improve global fishery outcomes and work to understand how to best address the complex social-ecological problems keeping many fisheries from achieving sustainability goals. My current research examines the use of collaborative, market-based tools, such as fishery improvement projects (FIPs), for inspiring positive change in wild-capture fisheries using case studies from the US, Indonesia, the Caribbean and Central America.

My work draws on concepts and tools from both ecology and social sciences in an effort to better understand the challenges faced in different fisheries, especially those in the developing world, and how these challenges can be addressed using the collaborative governance approach applied in the FIP model. For example, under what social-ecological conditions does the FIP model work? Can FIPs improve collaboration among different groups within a fishery system, or do these relationships already need to be established for a collaborative approach to succeed? How should we define a fishery system to ensure that key natural and human elements are included and how do specific FIPs align with the local fishery system they are applied in? What are the drivers keeping a fihsery in an undesirable state, and what social and ecological processes need to be addressed to ensure long-term change in fishery outcomes?

Outcomes from this research will help the fishing industry, managers, scientists and conservation practitioners by identifying key elements for project design and use that will improve the effectiveness of these initiatives in meeting both environmental sustainability and human development goals.
